What is Artificial Intelligence? How AI Works & Why It Matters

Today we are going to talk about something very interesting and exciting. What is Artificial Intelligence?

  • Do you ever wonder what intelligence is?
  • Do you ever wonder what Artificial Intelligence is?
  • Do you ever think about how computers are becoming smarter every day?

First, we are going to learn what is intelligence. Then we will also see Artificial Intelligence.

In this article we will first review what human intelligence is, how many types of human intelligence there are, and how it works. Then we will see what Artificial Intelligence is, how it works, and why it should be important to us.

What is Intelligence?

The abilities to learn, understand, and solve problems are referred to as intelligence. When you solve a puzzle, you are using your intelligence, and the more that you learn things at school, the more intelligent you become. Intelligence helps us think about situations intellectually.

More intelligence helps us remember important things. It enables us to use what we already know to solve new problems. Intelligence helps us to understand each other’s feelings. Intelligence helps us make good decisions about all situations.

There are so many kinds of intelligence. For example, some people are good at science and math. Some people are good at art and music. Some people understand feelings better than others. All of these different talents are intelligence.

You grow intelligence every time you learn something new. Each time you read a book, you are growing your intelligence. Every time you solve a problem, you get smarter. Your brain is like a muscle that grows when you exercise it.

Intelligence means adjusting to new situations as well. If you go to a new place, you use intelligence to learn where to go. You use intelligence to make new friends. Intelligence helps you make sense of the world.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is like giving computers and robots a certain type of brain. This type of brain allows them to think and learn, in a similar way that we do! When we say artificial, we mean something made by people, not from nature, and intelligence means being smart and good at problem solving.

Computers with AI can do such incredible things. They can look at pictures and tell you what is in them. They can listen to your voice and understand what you are saying. You can also get AI technology that could play games or drive cars without any human assistance!

Artificial Intelligence, or simply AI, is human-made intelligence. It is in computers and machines. AI can do things that need intelligence that usually requires people. For example, it can recognize images, follow speech, and solve problems.

AI systems are built by scientists and engineers. They write special instructions called programs, and these special programs tell computers how to think and learn. The computers can follow those instructions to be intelligent.

Next, AI systems can learn by examples. For example, if you show an AI system many pictures of dogs, it will learn to recognize dogs. This type of learning is called machine learning. It enables AI to become intelligent progressively.

In addition, AI systems can play games, like chess and video games. They can beat the human player by thinking of the best moves. These AI systems learn by playing millions of games and remembering what works and what does not work.

AI is different from a human brain. Our brain is natural and it is super complicated, whereas AI brains are made by humans with math, code, and lots of knowledge. But, AI continues to get smarter, which is what makes it so cool!

Different Types of Human Intelligence

How many different types of intelligence can you think of?

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

This helps you figure out math puzzles and problems. Someone with this intelligence could be very good at figuring out patterns.

Linguistic Intelligence

This helps you read, write and speak well. If you enjoy telling stories you might have good linguistic intelligence. You can communicate your ideas clearly with words.

Spatial Intelligence

This helps you understand shapes and spaces. Someone with strong spatial intelligence can picture an object from multiple angles. They are often good at drawing or building things.

Musical Intelligence

This helps you understand and make music. Someone with musical intelligence can remember melodies easily. They may be good at playing an instrument and/or singing.

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

This helps you control your body well. Athletes and dancers have bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. They move their bodies in a controlled way.

Interpersonal Intelligence

This helps you recognize or understand the feelings and thoughts of other people. People who show strong interpersonal intelligence tend to be good friends and know how to work well together in the same group, or team.

Intrapersonal Intelligence

This helps you recognize or understand your own feelings and thoughts. People who show strong interpersonal intelligence tend to know themselves well. They understand why they feel the way they do and can explain their feelings and thoughts to others.

Naturalist Intelligence

This helps you recognize nature, plants, and animals. People who show strong naturalist intelligence are good at observing the universe and can detect commonalities in nature. They often enjoy being outside.

No two people have the same strengths in these types of intelligence. Some people may have a strong array of types of intelligence. Others may only be strong in one or two. All types of intelligences are significant and valuable in their own way.

How Does Human Intelligence Work?

Your brain is the home of your intelligence. The brain has billions of small cells called neurons. Your neurons can communicate with each other using a special signal. When you think, they work together.

Your brain helps you remember all the things you learn. If you are using your brain to solve a problem, it finds the memories that are most useful. Then your brain uses those memories to help you piece things together. This happens very fast!

Your brain can also connect different ideas together. If you learn about dinosaurs and then you learn about fossils, your brain connects what you learned. This helps you learn about both.

Human intelligence develops over time. When you are a very small human, you learn to recognize faces. Then you learn to walk and to talk. In school, you learn to read and figure out math problems. As you learn new things, your intelligence keeps developing.

More than that, human intelligence has creativity. You can visualize not-yet-existing things. You can think of different things to solve a problem, make up a story or create a game. This creativity is a unique part of human intelligence.

Human intelligence also includes feelings and emotions. Your feelings help you decide something; they help you understand other people too. Different emotional states like happiness, sadness, and curiosity are part of your intelligence.

Also, human intelligence enables you to think ahead to the future. You can consider what might happen tomorrow, tomorrow, or next year. You can plan for the future by thinking about your goals. The ability to think ahead to the future is very big.
